Origin of our Name

Our Website takes its name from a poem written by William Butler Yeats

Turning and turning in the widening gyre, The falcon cannot hear the falconer, Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold, Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere, The ceremony of innocence is drowned, The best lack all conviction, while the worst, Are full of passionate intensity

The poem has had many meanings assigned to it but has come to be used to refer to collapses of society or order. It was written in 1919 during the 1918-1919 Flu pandemic. In fact Yeat’s pregnant wife had been near death, death rates were up to 70% in pregnant women, and he wrote this while she was convalescing.
